Motorola unveiled a concept model of its bendable display at the MWC 2024 event. There aren’t many details about this product, and all we know is that it bends around the wrist and measures 6.9 inches and is a plastic-based pOLED.
From the front, the bendable display concept looks like a slightly elongated smartphone. Instead of a hard frame, the back is made of several sections covered with woven fabric reminiscent of gym equipment. For such a structure, a soft and flexible body is required; Because the device must bend inwards. Therefore, it cannot be a unibody metal or plastic body like a regular phone. Since the device has several hinges, it can be bent in different ways. You can turn it into a small tent, which can be useful for watching a small video if you want, or you can bend the bottom to stand almost vertically, or wrap it around your wrist and turn it into a bulky smartwatch. The interesting thing is that you have to get a separate magnetic bracelet first to keep the device in place. The Motorola representative who showed off the bendable display wrapped it around his wrist and was able to move his hands without any problems. You can use the screen in watch mode; But as far as seen, Motorola has not bothered to create a special user interface for this mode.

How much interior space does the hinge set occupy? How does a fabric covered body deal with water or sweat? There are so many questions that Motorola didn’t even try to answer. However, the good thing about concept designs is that you can ignore the practical aspects and just focus on making the ambitious idea a reality. Currently, the bendable display is very bulky; But we can see how a modified version could become popular among certain groups. For example, many people keep their smartphones in armbands while running, and it’s not a big deal to imagine wrapping them around their wrists instead.
